Tony Docherty reflected on his two-season managerial stint at Dundee with pride, expressing surprise at his sacking after guiding the team to a 10th-place finish. The club performed well initially, finishing sixth in his debut season, earning Docherty nominations for manager of the year. He acknowledged the challenges of his second season, particularly dealing with injuries and fielding a young squad. Docherty remains passionate about nurturing players and was pleased to see several move to top Scottish teams despite the difficulties, emphasizing the need for strong cultural leadership in a young team.
Of course there is disappointment and an element of shock but I think I'm now in a place where I can accept it and move on.
I wanted to make sure the team had an identity and a playing style. I think we had that. We were a really front foot attacking team.
My passion is to work with players like that and improve them, build those relationships.
We were the youngest team in the league by quite a margin - 25% of our minutes went to under-21 players - and when you work with younger players there is inconsistency.
