Czechia sack coach after Faroe Islands humiliation in World Cup qualifying
"Czechia have sacked coach Ivan Hasek following their humiliating 2-1 loss to the Faroe Islands in 2026 World Cup qualifying. Having not reached the World Cup finals since 2006, Czechia are second in Group L, trailing Croatia by three points having played a game more. Czechia are already sure of a play-off spot owing to their Nations League ranking. However, a stunning defeat to the Faroe Islands in Torshavn on Sunday left their hopes of automatic qualification hanging by a thread."
"Croatia face the Faroe Islands and Montenegro in their final two qualifiers next month and will be expected to prevail in both to book their spot at the tournament in North America. Czechia face Gibraltar in their final qualifier but would need a remarkable set of results to leapfrog Croatia, who have a vastly superior goal difference. As such, the FACR has elected to end Hasek's second spell as national team coach, which began in January 2024."
Czechia dismissed Ivan Hasek after a surprising 2-1 defeat to the Faroe Islands that left automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup unlikely. The team sit second in Group L, three points behind Croatia with one game in hand, and retain a UEFA play-off berth through Nations League ranking. Croatia face the Faroe Islands and Montenegro and are favoured to win both matches. Czechia play Gibraltar but would require exceptional results and a swing in goal difference to overtake Croatia. Hasek had led the team since January 2024 and at Euro 2024; an interim coach will take charge into the March play-offs.
