LaLiga plans to stage Villarreal vs Barcelona at Hard Rock Stadium on Dec. 20 with UEFA reluctantly approving and tickets set to go on sale. The fixture would be played at a neutral venue instead of Villarreal's Estadio La Cerámica, removing Villarreal's home advantage. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois criticized the decision as affecting competitive integrity, contrasted LaLiga with NBA and NFL practices, and said the move breaches the players' agreement. LaLiga has pursued U.S. regular-season matches since 2018-19 to grow revenues. Players briefly protested by pausing the first 15 seconds of matches, citing lack of transparency.
