Victor Montagliani, Concacaf president, has criticized Conmebol's proposal to expand the men's World Cup to 64 teams for its 2030 edition. He argues that such a move would negatively impact the football ecosystem including national teams, leagues, and players, especially as the new 48-team format has yet to be put into effect. Alongside Montagliani, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin and AFC president Sheikh Salman also oppose the plan, fearing it may lead to unmanageable expansions and competitive integrity issues in the tournament.
I don't believe expanding the men's World Cup to 64 teams is the right move for the tournament itself and the broader football ecosystem, from national teams to club competitions, leagues, and players.
If the issue remains open to change, then the door will not only be open to expanding the tournament to 64 teams; But someone might come along and demand raising the number to 132 teams. Where would we end up then? It would become chaos.
