Chelsea's Buchanan to help single mums in Canada
"My mum is my rock and stone. I grew up with six other sisters, seeing the hardships and suffering in ways. I think football was always my escape from reality,"
"She was from Jamaica and didn't have a higher education so it was hard for her to find a job. We were on welfare money and were part of the government housing."
"That's really why I want to help single mums. We often didn't have electricity and water. I was battling things that many didn't know. Football was my safe haven."
Kadeisha Buchanan grew up in a single-parent household with six sisters, experienced welfare reliance and government housing, and relied on football as an escape and safe haven. FIFA selected her as one of 14 players for a social impact programme, providing $25,000 per player plus business training, professional support and external investment. Buchanan pitched a foundation to make football more accessible for single mums and their daughters by funding transport, registration fees, kits and offering free tickets to Canada matches. The foundation will launch in January, hold its first camp in April, and is pursuing sponsors and next steps.
