Champions League debut and David Luiz - the rise of Pafos
"Everybody was in ecstasy,"
"Everybody was totally happy because we did something amazing. Nobody expected us to be in the Champions League this season."
"I'm very happy to be here because I can see this feeling, with everybody's hunger, to do something great."
"Our vision was clear - we wanted to create something new, something competitive, something sustainable - not just a football club but one that could give back to the community,"
Pafos FC was formed in 2014 from a merger of local clubs and rose from the second tier to European competition. The club won its first domestic league title, reached the Conference League last 16, and this season progressed through three qualifying rounds to reach the Champions League group stage, becoming one of two debutants alongside Kairat Almaty. Pafos eliminated Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Dynamo Kyiv and Red Star Belgrade in qualifying. Owner Roman Dubov drove a 2017 takeover with aims of competitiveness, sustainability and community benefit. David Luiz joined in August and praised the squad's hunger. Group fixtures include matches against Olympiakos, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
