"It appears that their morals, and principled position, was only on paper not in actions where it counts,"
"Israel should not be in this competition,"
"What was expressed was a concern over the open criticism of Uefa and the FAI, regulatory bodies to whom the club is subject, as well as each club official's responsibility to respect the neutrality provisions of the Fifa code of ethics and the Uefa statutes. To be clear, the substance of Ms Byrne's views has never been attacked by the club or Trivela Group."
Joanna Byrne, Drogheda United co-chairperson and Sinn Féin spokesperson on sport, was informed by the club board that her role was "no longer tenable" and that she was expected to resign after public comments about the Republic of Ireland's Nations League fixtures against Israel. Byrne said she was "angry and dismayed" that Ireland will fulfil the fixtures and accused the club of having morals and principled positions "only on paper not in actions where it counts." Drogheda United and owner Trivela Group said no board changes had been made and framed concerns as related to criticism of UEFA and the FAI and obligations under the FIFA code of ethics and UEFA statutes. The club said it had not attacked the substance of Byrne's views. The Football Association of Ireland voted in November 2025 to ask UEFA to ban Israel from competitions, citing alleged breaches of UEFA statutes.
