""These are like proper footballers," Cheatley told BBC Sport. "And then you've got me, who just kicks the ball around on a Sunday for fun!""
""I didn't even think about it," she said. "It's the perfect touch, really, to kick it up in the air and get it past the defender. "And then while my back's to goal, there's only one thing I can do from there.""
Ashley Cheatley, 30, cushioned the ball on her right thigh, flicked it over a defender and completed an overhead kick to score for fifth-tier Brentford in an FA Cup first-round match. The goal opened the scoring against Ascot United and is shortlisted for Fifa's Marta Award alongside players such as Mariona Caldentey, Vivianne Miedema and Marta. Cheatley joined Brentford from Ashford Town before the 2024–25 season and scored 46 goals as Brentford won promotion from the sixth-tier London & South East Regional Division 1 North. The Marta Award winner will be decided by a fan vote and a panel, with public voting closing on 28 November.
