Brazil keeper Fabio breaks Shilton's world record for most games

Fabio, the 44-year-old Fluminense goalkeeper, reached 1,391 competitive appearances, surpassing former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. He equalled Shilton's mark on Saturday and achieved the new milestone after a 2-0 Copa Sudamericana win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio. Fluminense and Brazilian media say he now stands alone in football history, although FIFA and CONMEBOL have not declared it an official record. Fabio spent his entire career in Brazil, including 976 appearances for Cruzeiro, 150 for Vasco da Gama and 30 for Uniao Bandeirante. He won the 2023 Copa Libertadores and helped reach the Club World Cup semifinals.
Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. Sometimes we don't realise the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years, Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last-16 second leg.
