Hiroki Itō returned to the squad toward the end of the first half of the season and is fit to play regular football again. Christoph Freund described multiple prior setbacks but said the club has been careful and is convinced the issues are now behind Itō. Itō is a left-footed center-back who can also operate at left-back, offering tactical flexibility. Head coach Vincent Kompany gains greater defensive options and squad depth.
