Xabi Alonso departed Real Madrid after 233 days in charge following a 3-2 Spanish Supercopa defeat to Barcelona. Alonso won 24 of 34 matches at Madrid and lost six, having previously led Bayer Leverkusen to an unexpected Bundesliga title in 2024. Hansi Flick described Alonso as a fantastic coach with a strong future and said Alonso will find a new project quickly. Flick noted a good personal relationship formed in Leverkusen and urged coaches to reflect and improve. Flick also prepared Barcelona for a Copa del Rey trip to Racing Santander and mentioned Joao Cancelo could play some minutes.
