"On 1 May 2025, Athletic Club player Yeray Álvarez underwent an in-competition doping control carried out by UEFA following a UEFA Europa League match. The analysis of the player's sample by a WADA-accredited laboratory revealed the presence of Canrenone, which is a substance prohibited in- and out- of competition under the category S5. Yeray Álvarez tested positive for Canrenone after Athletic Club's Europa League semi-final on 1 May 2025. A WADA-accredited laboratory identified Canrenone, listed under S5 Diuretics and Masking Agents on the 2025 WADA Prohibited List. The player accepted a voluntary provisional suspension effective 2 June 2025. UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings on 10 June and carried out an investigation. The UEFA disciplinary body met on 19 August 2025 and imposed a ten-month suspension starting from the provisional suspension date and ending on 2 April 2026. The player stated he unintentionally took a hair-loss prevention medicine while treating alopecia following a 2016 cancer diagnosis.
