AFCON: Diaz 'takes full responsibilty' for Morocco penalty miss
"Diaz missed an injury-time penalty that would have handed Morocco the title and Senegal went on to win in extra time. The decision from referee Jean Jacques Ndala to award tournament hosts Morocco a spot-kick in the 98th-minute, not long after he had ruled out a Senegal goal for a seemingly innocuous challenge from Abdoulaye Seck on Achraf Hakimi, incensed the Lions of Teranga to the extent they left the field in protest."
"Brahim Diaz statement. ❤️‍🩹🇲🇦My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you all gave me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn't alone. I dreamed of this title, I failed and I take full responsibility."
Morocco midfielder Brahim Diaz apologised for missing an injury-time penalty that would have delivered the Africa Cup of Nations title. The referee awarded a 98th-minute spot-kick after earlier disallowing a Senegal goal for a challenge on Achraf Hakimi, provoking Senegal players to leave the field in protest and causing a 17-minute delay. When play resumed Diaz chipped a Panenka into Edouard Mendy's hands. Senegal secured the title in extra time through Pape Gueye's strike. Diaz said his soul hurts, accepted full responsibility and apologised. The Confederation of African Football announced an investigation into unacceptable behaviour by some players and officials.
