2026 World Cup to feature 'hydration break' in every half
"a streamlined and simplified version of the breaks used at some previous tournaments, including the FIFA Club World Cup 2025."
"I don't think I have ever played in such heat,"
"I don't think it's healthy, to be honest, but I managed to get through it."
Every 2026 World Cup match will be paused for a three-minute hydration break in each half at the 22-minute mark, effectively creating four quarters. The breaks will occur regardless of weather to prioritise player welfare. The decision followed consultation with coaches and broadcasters. FIFA described the measure as a streamlined and simplified version of breaks used at some previous tournaments, including the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. At that Club World Cup water breaks were used only in extreme heat, with some matches exceeding 100°F (38°C). Players reported dizziness and safety concerns in those conditions. The full World Cup schedule was confirmed on Saturday.
