Macclesfield Town previously competed in England's third tier and faced Premier League teams such as Manchester City, Fulham and Bournemouth. The club spent much of the past 25 years in the Football League before financial collapse left the Silkmen bankrupt, their Moss Rose ground derelict and the community without a team through COVID lockdowns. Local entrepreneur Rob Smethurst impulsively purchased the club during a personal crisis marked by heavy drinking and partying. His takeover coincided with a dramatic revival that produced an FA Cup Third Round victory over Premier League and current holders Crystal Palace. The purchase ultimately provided personal recovery and a sporting resurgence.
