He survived the mountains and was sheltered by a sympathetic nurse in a Swiss hospital until World War II ended. He moved to Aspen in 1947 and founded Sport Obermeyer. As a ski instructor he observed inadequate equipment and designed improvements. He developed nearly a dozen industry firsts, including quilted down parkas, turtlenecks, dual-construction ski boots, pre-shaped gloves, mirrored sunglasses and high-altitude sunscreen. He turned 106.
