Tahoe's Volunteer Backcountry Ski Patrol Targets Safety Before Emergencies Strike - SnowBrains
""When we are out on patrol, we do a lot of outreach. I like to think of what we do as search and rescue avoidance," Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol Director Chris Haagen said in an article by Abridged."
"Members of the Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol are backcountry experts who have undergone extensive training in avalanche awareness and First Aid, with a focus on disaster prevention rather than response."
"In addition to spending time on the slopes, the Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol aims to educate the public. The team conducts avalanche awareness and rescue courses throughout the year, typically drawing crowds of roughly 40 people. They also create avalanche beacon testing trails for skiers on their way to find backcountry lines. Lately, the patrol has been working on a program to encourage backcountry skiers and snowboarders to carry radios and use a common frequency to streamline communication in emergencies."
Rising resort costs and popularity have pushed many skiers into Lake Tahoe backcountry terrain, where conditions are unpredictable and risks are high. Many new backcountry skiers lack needed training, increasing accident potential. The Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol is a volunteer team of more than 60 trained backcountry skiers and riders who patrol weekends in groups, observe conditions, and remain prepared for emergencies. The patrol emphasizes avalanche awareness, First Aid, and disaster prevention, while offering regular avalanche courses, beacon testing trails, and a program to standardize radio communication for faster emergency coordination.
