Skiing In Third Person Looks Incredibly Challenging
"Skiing is hard enough as it is, but the Sickos crew wanted to see if they could make it even harder. They've done a lot in the past to do that, including skiing on enormous, 11-foot-long skis, but this new style of skiing seems to take it to the next level. Using FPV goggles, a camera, and a pretty impressive rig, they managed to set up a real-life 3rd person skiing experience."
"For those who aren't aware, the idea of a 3rd person view (beyond the storytelling third-person) comes from video games in which the player views the player-character from a behind and slightly above perspective. It works great for a lot of video games, but it's pretty easy to tell that it isn't the smoothest technique for skiing."
The Sickos crew built a rig combining FPV goggles, a camera, and mounting hardware to provide a behind-and-above third-person viewpoint for the skier. The setup transmits a gaming-style third-person perspective directly to the skier's FPV goggles. The crew had previously experimented with extreme modifications like 11-foot-long skis. The real-life third-person perspective changes depth cues and camera smoothness compared with traditional first-person skiing footage. The altered viewpoint increases difficulty for the skier while offering a novel visual experience that emulates behind-the-character camera angles from video games, challenging conventional techniques for capturing ski footage.
