"Monarch Mountain, Colorado, had a great start to this stormy weekend on Friday. Only one inch of new snow appeared on the snowstake by first chair, but as usual, conditions were much deeper. The first run felt more like a few inches on the existing hard pack. By the end of the day though, the skiing was borderline bottomless. The snowstake now shows about nine inches of new snow since this morning with more on the way!"
"The real treat though, is the Mirkwood Basin zone at the top of the Breezeway lift. The hike-to Mirkwood Basin zone at Monarch opened earlier this month, but it was my first time back this season. If the frontside of Monarch feels twice as deep as reported, then Mirkwood feels five times that! The first run down Orcs provided perfectly angled, deep, soft powder. I had to hike up for another run, and decided that the north-facing Staircase run would be the one."
"I normally spend a lot of my day at Monarch around the Panorama lift. Today though, I could barely get myself to stop lapping the equally fun terrain under Garfield. The rocks, shrubs, and other hits on Cleanzer and Ajax are in and really fun right now. The mellower runs on the south side such as Drifter and North Forty have great coverage and kept filling up all day."
Monarch Mountain opened the stormy weekend with variable early coverage that quickly deepened to about nine inches of new snow by late day, with more expected. Early runs started on existing hard pack but evolved into borderless, deep powder. Terrain under Garfield, including Cleanzer and Ajax, offered fun hits and good coverage, while south-side runs such as Drifter and North Forty filled in and skied well. Zipper, JR's, Sheer-Rocko, Outback, and Shagnasty provided great tree and open-slope turns. Geno's Meadows near Breezeway was among the best, and the hike-to Mirkwood Basin delivered exceptionally deep, perfectly angled powder, with Staircase standing out as a season highlight. Some runs like B's Bash remained closed.
