Les 3 Vallees, France, Report: "Flabbergasted" by 52,000 Acres of Lift-Accessed Couloirs, Trams, & True Big-Mountain Terrain - SnowBrains
"The alpine terrain is pure diesel. Jagged peaks, spires, massive couloirs, tons of snow, and hanging platforms all accessible via tram, gondola, and chairlift. I skied a small couloir I spotted under the gondola, then gawked at the terrain attached to the Saulire tram. I was gobsmacked. I zipped up the tram, crossed the "Closed" signs (these are to keep folks out who don't have the gear and training), and delved into the unknown."
"Almost immediately, I found an awesome zone with strong fall-line skiing in a steep, large landslide area. I skied the edge of the slide zone and the skiing was excellent. A few inches of new, wet snow made it soft and fun. I was shocked as I'd expected to just ski groomers all day and scope zones for the coming storm. At that point, I realized it was game on."
The day began at the luxurious Fahrenheit Seven Courchevel after light overnight snow and fatigue from travel. Low fog and clouds prompted tree exploration, leading to a steep landslide zone with strong fall-line skiing on a few inches of soft, wet snow. A circuitous return crossed roads and low lifts before climbing back into the alpine where skies cleared. Multiple lifts and gondolas revealed jagged peaks, spires, massive couloirs, and hanging platforms accessible by lift. The route included a small couloir under a gondola, crossing "Closed" signs, skiing the Grand Couloir and adjacent chutes, meeting Martin, and a long traverse with a bootpack.
