Kicking Horse, BC, Backcountry Report: Christmas Powder Miracle!! - SnowBrains
"The snow sparkled as I hooted, slashed, and popped off pillows. The whole experience was immaculate. I was as high as a Christmas kite on the whole affair. I was the only one on the backside and it took me a long time to set the skin track and climb out. Once out, the sun still shone. I climbed higher into more challenging terrain and studied what others had already done there."
"I pushed it a bit too far on this one. Too steep, too tight, too dark. I made 4 turns, then had to pull over for the sluff. The sluff ruined the pinner part of the chute, leaving me jump turning in steep runnelled terrain. The apron was not what I'd anticipated. The left side of the chute held flutes and spins that I couldn't see in the darkness."
I was alone on a sunny, deep powder day in BC with no friends or family. I started conservatively on the backside, enjoying sparkling snow as I hooted, slashed, and popped off pillows. After setting a long skin track, I climbed into more challenging terrain and reviewed pit data and observations before attempting a new chute. One chute offered perfect snow and a rippable angle with difficult light but amazing skiing. A later chute proved too steep, tight, and dark; a sluff forced me to pull over, ruing a pinner and leaving jump turns in runnelled terrain. The apron offered deep snow; I finished grinning.
