"Yesterday I leaned into my little "Chuting Project" here at Kicking Horse. There are 10 chutes on this wall. 2 of the chutes need more snow before they're fun/viable. That leaves 8 skiable chutes ranging from completely benign to pretty damn spicy. I've been absent-mindedly chipping away at them since December 21, but yesterday, I realized I could ski all 8 of them if I focused."
"I started out the day in a very steep, winding chute that delighted me. 2 had hit it the day before, yet it mattered not. They'd knocked all the sluff down and I found benefit in being guided by their tracks through the most confusing section. I ended up on a rock shelf on the right side of the chute, just wide enough for my skis to clank on the right wall when I turned and my tips to hang into space on the left."
At Kicking Horse, the chute wall contains ten chutes, eight currently skiable and ranging from benign to very spicy. The chuting project began December 21 and progressed gradually until a decision to focus allowed skiing all eight in a day. The morning run was a steep, winding chute with some previous sluff and useful tracks, leading to a rock shelf and a playful lower apron. Christmas Tree Chute was skied twice, offering better conditions on the first fresh day and challenging avalanche debris on the second. Flat light late in the day made the lower terrain dark, prompting an easy decision to stop after two standout chutes.
