Kicking Horse, BC, Backcountry Report: 213" = Record December Snowfall! | 0F, Deep, Dry, Explosive Powder Tree Skiing - SnowBrains
"With just two days left in December, and over 3 metres of snowfall, this month is officially one for the record books! 17 days since we opened and it's been 17 straight days of pure Kicking Horse powder. Deep turns, full smiles, and winter firing on all cylinders. Blubbering and sobbing in the car ride to the mountain. Tears running down my cheeks..."
"My favorite character in my new favorite book, "Lonesome Dove," died on my drive to the mountain. I'm still a bit shook - that's how good this book is... 6ºF at the car. 0ºF at the top of the gondola. I was hoping for sun, but the classic Canadian clouds had other ideas. At the top of the Stairway chair, I was over it. Exhausted, tired, and sleepy, I would have gone home. If I were alone, I'd have gone home for sure."
"Ben said, "Nope, we ain't goin' home." He forced me to ski backcountry, and I'll always be forever grateful. The snow was still stupendous. Deep, dry, and "As cold as a witch's titty," as my mom used to say. The powder was explosive. We drained it as low as we cou,ld and it took me a while to get outta there. I need a rest day, and it's just not coming..."
December delivered over three metres of snowfall at Kicking Horse, producing 17 consecutive days of powder since opening. Skiers experienced deep turns, full smiles, and consistently excellent winter conditions. A skier described emotional distress during the drive after a favorite book character's death, faced temperatures from 6ºF at the car to 0ºF at gondola top, and almost left before being persuaded to ski backcountry. The backcountry offered stupendous, deep, dry, explosive powder all the way down. No rest day followed; plans include a seven-day hut trip with 13 companions, a visit to Revelstoke, then a return to Kicking Horse.
