"Yesterday, February 19, Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing experienced an avalanche that tragically took the life of one of our guests. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the guest's family and loved ones, and to all those affected during this incredibly difficult and painful time. This is a deeply saddening moment for our entire community. We are thinking of everyone impacted and holding them in our thoughts. We would also like to sincerely thank everyone for their support of our staff and guests. Your compassion and care mean more than we can express. - Dave Pehowich, General Manager"
"Avalanches are one of many risks to people in mountains and, similar to many outdoor activities, it's impossible to eliminate 100 per cent of the risks in the backcountry."
On February 19 a skier was killed by an avalanche in the Akolkolex River drainage, 19 kilometres southeast of Revelstoke, British Columbia. The skier, last in a group guided by Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing, triggered a size 2 slab avalanche on a southeast-facing treeline slope at 2,150 metres, with an average crown depth of 50 centimetres and an 80-metre width. Guides dug the skier from 1.5 metres of snow, performed CPR, and arranged helicopter transport to Queen Victoria Hospital, where the skier succumbed to injuries. No other guests or guides were harmed. Avalanche Canada rated the snowpack considerable (Level 3). The outfitter emphasized its safety culture and noted that backcountry risks cannot be eliminated completely.
