"While snow in Hawaii may surprise many, it is a regular event on the state's tallest volcanic peaks. The high elevations of Mauna Kea (a dormant volcano), which rises to 13,796 feet, and Mauna Loa (the world's largest active volcano), at 13,678 feet, create a sub-Arctic climate at their summits. According to Tom Birchard, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Honolulu, snowfall occurs on average five to eight times per year, primarily during Hawaii's wet season from October through April."

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Big Island summits from 6 PM Monday to 6 PM Tuesday, with up to four inches of snow forecast. An upper level low will deepen moisture over the eastern islands and bring snow showers that may mix with rain. Travel conditions will be hazardous with slippery roads and limited visibility. Mauna Kea (13,796 ft) and Mauna Loa (13,678 ft) have sub‑Arctic summit climates that allow regular snowfall. Snow typically occurs five to eight times per year, mainly during the wet season from October through April.
