Elko County Plane Crash Rescue Begins With a Smartphone Alert in Remote Nevada Mountains
"Conditions shifted by early afternoon. By mid-afternoon, skies cleared enough to permit a helicopter rescue, and the injured pilot was safely airlifted off the mountain. Undersheriff Justin Ames credited the outcome to coordinated teamwork among a broad coalition of responders."
Dispatch received an iPhone crash alert around 10:30 a.m., directing responders to rugged terrain south of Hole in the Mountain Peak in Clover Valley. GPS coordinates placed the downed small plane in a highly inaccessible area of Elko County. The aircraft struck the mountain at about 10,200 feet above sea level above the snow line during poor weather. Fresh snow accumulated between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and dense cloud cover prevented air rescue early on. First responders advanced on foot with the possibility of a difficult ground evacuation. By mid-afternoon, skies cleared enough for a helicopter, and the injured pilot was airlifted to safety. Multiple agencies coordinated throughout the rescue operation.
