Chinese paraglider survives accidental 8,000-metre-high flight above the clouds
Briefly

Peng Yujiang, a Chinese paraglider, experienced a terrifying incident when a strong updraft propelled him over 8,000m in the Qilian mountains. Initially launching from 3,000m to test new equipment, he unexpectedly soared beyond what he had planned, enduring harsh conditions including freezing temperatures and loss of consciousness. Ultimately, he landed safely but was banned from paragliding for six months due to the lack of flight plans and approvals for such an ascent. His experience highlights the risks of extreme sports even for experienced individuals.
"My hands were frozen outside. I kept trying to talk on the radio," he said, recounting the harrowing experience of soaring unexpectedly high while paragliding.
A normal person cannot be exposed at 8,000m without oxygen, so this is not something that can be done voluntarily, said a sports bureau official.
