"Less than 48 hours before I got in my car to drive up to Burke Mountain for the first time, some of the biggest ski industry news out of the East Coast hit my email: Smugglers' Notch Resort, Vermont, was Purchased by Bear Den Partners. For those of you who don't already know, Smugglers' Notch is one of the biggest ski resorts on the East Coast, and is widely known to be a fiercely independent mountain."
"Family-owned and operated for the past several decades, there was talk for many years about what may happen to Smuggs, and more specifically, who would take over this cherished resort. So when the news on Wednesday first came out that Bear Den Partners was acquiring a majority stake in the resort, I was surprised, yet delighted to hear the news."
Burke Mountain is served by two high-speed chairlifts, facilitating quick movement across the terrain. Bear Den Partners is the new majority owner of Smugglers' Notch and also owns Berkshire East and Catamount, having recently acquired Burke Mountain. The resort opened in 1956 and features 53 trails over 178 skiable acres with a 2,011-foot vertical drop, summit elevation 3,267 feet, base elevation 1,256 feet, and average annual snowfall of 217 inches. The area has five lifts, no night skiing, and summer activities including mountain biking and camping. Tree-covered summits often appear as snow ghosts and East Bowl offers sweeping groomed vistas. Local observers express curiosity about changes under new ownership.
