Avalanche Mitigation Releases Large Slide At Swiss Ski Resort
"Europe has gotten some pretty remarkable snowfall in the past several days, with feet of snow falling at several resorts and skyrocketing the avalanche danger. The snow has been so deep, in fact, that some ski resorts were forced to completely close during avalanche mitigation. At what appears to be Switzerland's Regions Dents du Midi, a part of the Portes du Soleil interconnected ski resort network, avalanche mitigation released a pretty wild slide that ripped across a cat track."
"There was nobody below when the slide released, aside from what looks to be a patroller tucked in a safe area. This video demonstrates successful mitigation. According to the video description, the recent, significant accumulations combined with weak base layers and wind and overloading lead to the slide, in addition to the active mitigation work designed to keep the mountain safe for both skiers and staff."
Parts of Europe received feet of new snow over several days, sharply increasing avalanche danger and forcing some ski resorts to close for mitigation. At Dents du Midi in Switzerland, within the Portes du Soleil network, controlled avalanche mitigation released a large slide that crossed a cat track. No one was caught below when the slide released; a patroller remained in a sheltered area. Significant accumulations combined with weak base layers, wind loading, and overloading contributed to the release. Active mitigation work aimed to protect skiers and staff while managing unstable snowpack.
