A Rare Inbounds Avalanche Occurred at Alyeska Resort, AK, Today - SnowBrains
"Change Of Plans... Due to unsafe conditions on the upper mountain, lift operations will be limited to Chair 7 and the Bear Cub Quad today from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The Tram will remain open for foot passengers only with a 2:30pm final upload and 3:00pm final download. Then, the Tram will reopen for Seven Glaciers service at 4:30pm, with possible weather delays. Our teams are keeping a close eye on conditions and will provide updates as things evolve. We appreciate the patience and understanding, we're all in it together."
"A rare 30-year-event avalanche also happened at Alyeska and was classified as a D4 avalanche on May 11th, 2023, on a section of the North Face that the mountain team was closely monitoring. The avalanche crown was between 6 and 10 feet and likely slid on the November 22nd crust. The snow piled in the kettle ponds on the mountain, causing them to overflow and flood the tram base, and drained into the hotel pond."
A rare inbound avalanche impacted the lower-mountain chairlift at Alyeska Resort, forcing closure of Chair 4 (Ted's Express). Lift operations were limited to Chair 7 and the Bear Cub Quad from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The Tram operated for foot passengers only with a 2:30pm final upload and 3:00pm final download, and was scheduled to reopen for Seven Glaciers service at 4:30pm with possible weather delays. Mountain teams monitored conditions and provided updates. Alyeska experienced notable avalanches in May 2023, April 2024, and January 2025. The resort has 285 inches of seasonal snow and a 105-inch summit base.
