6 U.S. Athletes Make The Cut for Freeride World Tour Finals in Alaska - SnowBrains
"Freeride is one of the few professional sports that does not control its arena. Competition takes place on natural mountain faces shaped entirely by the elements, and when conditions do not allow for safe and fair competition, the event cannot run."
"With this cancellation, the current Overall Rankings, based on two results out of two as outlined in the FWT rulebook, determine The Cut and qualification for the FWT Finals. The FWT Baqueira Beret Pro in the Spanish Pyrenees and FWT Val Thorens Pro in the French Alps, took place January 15 and January 26 respectively, earning the athletes the points needed to now take on the new FWT YETI Alaska Haines Pro and FWT YETI Xtreme Verbier Finals events."
The FIS Freeride World Tour evaluated the Fieberbrunn Pro venue and alternative locations in Austria and Tyrol but determined none met required safety, snow quality, and contestability standards for professional competition. Freeride differs from controlled-arena sports as competitions occur on natural mountain faces shaped by weather and elements. With the cancellation, Overall Rankings from two completed events determine qualification for the FWT Finals. Athletes who competed in Baqueira Beret Pro and Val Thorens Pro earned points to advance to the FWT YETI Alaska Haines Pro and FWT YETI Xtreme Verbier Finals. A FWT World Champion will be crowned across four categories: Snowboard Women, Snowboard Men, Ski Women, and Ski Men. The event village remains open with a FWT Junior competition scheduled.
