"AvalancheThree skiers are dead following a large avalanche that struck the ski area of Val d'Isère on Friday, February 13, in France's Savoie region. According to CRS Alpes, the slide occurred around 11:30 a.m. in an off-piste sector of the resort. Rescue teams completed their search shortly before 2 p.m., with body recovery operations continuing into the early afternoon. Two of the victims, both British nationals, were part of a group of four skiers accompanied by a professional instructor."
"The third victim was found all the way in the creek bed. Cédric Bonnevie, director of piste operations in Val d'Isère, explained at a press conference that the guided group was positioned low on the slope and may not have seen the avalanche coming. "They would not have, it seems, seen the avalanche come because they were all the way at the bottom of the slope," Bonnevie said."
A large avalanche struck an off-piste sector of Val d'Isère around 11:30 a.m. on February 13, killing three skiers. Two victims were British members of a four-skier group guided by a professional instructor; all carried transceivers, shovels, and probes. The instructor tested negative for alcohol and narcotics. The third victim, a French national, was skiing separately and was found in the creek bed below after cascading avalanche flows swept into a valley creek. One additional person sustained minor injuries. An Albertville manslaughter investigation was opened and CRS Alpes was assigned. A witness video was shared with rescuers.
