A 15-year-old skier from Calgary died at Alberta Children's Hospital on February 28 following an avalanche at Nakiska Ski Area. Two teenage skiers triggered the avalanche while bootpacking up a slope on February 27. Emergency services received a call at 12:49 p.m. One teenager self-rescued, while the second was located unresponsive and transported by EMS to Calgary hospital, where he died early the following morning. Both teenagers were athletes with the Alberta Alpine Ski Association. Multiple rescue resources were deployed to the scene. The Alberta Alpine Ski Association and Alpine Canada issued statements expressing deep sadness and extending condolences to the family, while thanking rescue teams and volunteers for their rapid response.
