US ski star Lindsey Vonn crashes in Olympic downhill race
"American alpine skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn will not medal in today's women's downhill race, one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the 2026 Winter Olympics. In an explosive crash near the top of the downhill course in Cortina, Vonn landed a jump perpendicular to the slope and tumbled to a stop shortly below. She is currently being evacuated from the race course by helicopter. Whether Vonn is injured or how badly is not yet know at this time."
"The 41-year-old Team USA star, who had already had a decorated career when she retired in 2019, was attempting to stage a comeback within a comeback: After launching out of retirement straight into the stratosphere of the World Cup downhill standings, she wanted to cap it all off with an Olympic medal barely a week after tearing her ACL. The downhill race began at 11:30 a.m. local time on the Olimpia delle Tofane ski course in Cortina."
Lindsey Vonn crashed near the start of the women's downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina and is being evacuated by helicopter. Competition was paused while she was removed and official results remain pending; she will not finish in the top three. The 41-year-old had returned from retirement after a partial knee replacement and a recent ACL tear, and had risen rapidly in World Cup downhill standings. Vonn had targeted an Olympic medal at Cortina because of the venue's significance to her career. The extent of any injury remains unknown as of the report.
