US hockey star Hilary Knight hits back at Trump's joke about women's team during SNL skit
"It was going to be just us, but we thought we'd invite the guys too. We thought we'd give them a little moment to shine. The last time we did that was two whole Olympics ago."
"She's the leader of our group, the heartbeat. We don't get here without her. I can't say enough great things about her, and to cap off her Olympic career in this fashion, just so happy for her."
"Many of the men's team have since expressed regret about laughing at Trump's comments, with the Boston Bruins' Charlie McAvoy saying he is certainly sorry for how we responded to it in that moment."
Hilary Knight, captain of the US women's ice hockey team that won Olympic gold, responded to Donald Trump's joke suggesting he would need to invite the women's team to the White House or face impeachment. Knight called the comments distasteful and unfortunate. While the men's team visited the White House, Knight and her teammates declined, planning instead to celebrate at a July event organized by Flavor Flav. On Saturday Night Live, Knight appeared with teammate Megan Keller and men's players Jack and Quinn Hughes. Knight humorously referenced Trump's joke, and when Quinn Hughes mentioned the men's last gold was in 1980, Knight quipped that the women achieved it two Olympics ago. Several men's players later expressed regret about laughing at Trump's original comments.
