A catastrophic avalanche, triggered by the collapse of the Moment glacier, has completely destroyed the Swiss village of Blatten. Once home to 300 residents for over 800 years, the village was erased in an instant as nine million tonnes of rock descended into the valley. Fortunately, most residents were evacuated beforehand due to concerns about stability. Mayor Matthias Bellwald expressed profound loss, noting that the rich history and memories, preserved in books and photographs, have been swept away, leaving the community in mourning while they seek shelter in adjacent villages.
The entire mass descended into the valley below, obliterating the village that had been there for more than 800 years. Blatten has been wiped away.
In short, this is ground zero for Blatten. The memories preserved in countless books, photo albums, documentation - everything is gone.
A chunk of Kleines Nesthorn mountain's peak had crumbled, and its rubble hung over the silent, empty streets of Blatten, held back only by the glacier.
Almost all of the 300 residents had been evacuated a week earlier after authorities grew concerned about the stability of the mountain.
