"We, as para athletes, have a very important role to showcase ability, to showcase that there is this high level of sport that you can achieve. I think that same thing is really necessary for queers in sports. Speaking to OutSports ahead of the Paralympics, Jake Adicoff emphasizes the dual importance of para athletes demonstrating elite athletic capability while simultaneously advancing LGBTQ+ visibility and representation in competitive sports."
The 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan (March 6-15) will feature over 600 athletes from 56 countries, including several LGBTQ+ competitors. Following Team LGBTQ+'s record-breaking 11 medals at the Milan Winter Olympics, queer athletes continue to make their mark in Paralympic sports. Notable competitors include Jake Adicoff, a four-time Paralympic medalist and visually-impaired cross-country skier who advocates for LGBTQ+ athlete representation, and Jo Butterfield from Team GB, who competes in wheelchair curling after previously winning gold in track and field events. These athletes demonstrate high-level athletic achievement while advancing visibility for LGBTQ+ participation in Paralympic competition.
