Tahoe ski resorts delay season opening with warmer weather; Heavenly opens Monday
""We had some unseasonably warm temperatures heading into the last week," said Cole Zimmerman with Vail Resorts, Tahoe Region."
""We originally planned to open on the 21st, but Mother Nature took a little longer to join the party here," Zimmerman said. "But in the last week though, we got 20 inches of snow and some really good temperatures for snowmaking.""
""We had a really good start to the season, Mother Nature laid down some moisture early on, grounds frozen, temperatures dropped," he said. "We've seen three really good AR (atmospheric river) events come through; upper elevations are covered. But unfortunately, Mother Nature is warming up a bit right now. So, that's going to close the snow-making window.""
Several major Tahoe ski resorts delayed planned openings due to limited snow and unseasonably warm temperatures. Heavenly postponed its weekend opening to Monday and will open Patsi's and Powderbowl after 20 inches of recent snow and favorable snowmaking temperatures. Palisades Tahoe delayed its opening, and resorts including North Star, Kirkwood, and Sugar Bowl remain on hold. Early atmospheric river events covered upper elevations, but rising temperatures have closed much of the snowmaking window. Skiers and snowboarders should expect early-season conditions, limited terrain, and variable snow quality during the holiday week and prepare accordingly.
