A significant landslide struck the village of Blatten in Switzerland following the partial collapse of a nearby glacier, prompting the evacuation of its 300 residents. Authorities had previously warned that up to five million cubic meters of rock and debris could detach from the mountain, leading to the disaster. One individual remains missing, and the impacts on the village's infrastructure have been devastating, with videos capturing the moment the glacier collapsed and debris covered buildings. Swiss President Keller-Sutter extended her support to the affected residents, highlighting the emotional toll of losing their homes.
"An unbelievable amount of material thundered down into the valley," said spokesperson, Matthias Ebener, describing the massive landslide caused by a glacier collapse in Switzerland.
Authorities had warned days ago that up to five million cubic meters of rock and debris could break off at any moment, leading to the evacuation of Blatten's residents.
Video shared shows the glacier collapse, creating an enormous cloud as rock and debris thundered down into the village, devastating buildings and infrastructure.
Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed her sympathy for the residents, stating, "It's terrible to lose your home. I feel for the residents of Blatten at this time."
