Scott Hastings, a Scotland rugby union centre, died at age 61. He earned 65 caps for Scotland and played 51 internationals alongside his full-back brother, Gavin. He was selected for the British and Irish Lions tours to Australia in 1989 and New Zealand in 1993. After his playing career, he worked as a rugby broadcaster. His daughters announced his death in an Edinburgh hospital, stating he passed away peacefully surrounded by family. The statement said he was undergoing cancer treatment and deteriorated quickly due to complications, despite efforts by the ICU team at the Western General Hospital. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend praised Hastings as an iconic figure, highlighting his defensive role in the 1990 grand slam win over England.
"Like many other schoolboys throughout Scotland at the time, I wanted to emulate Scott's approach to the game and how he took the game to the opposition. A few years later, I was fortunate to play alongside him on a number of occasions for Scotland, as he became our most-capped player."
