Alysa Liu, a 19-year-old figure skater from Richmond, made a remarkable comeback by winning gold at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. Liu scored a total of 222.97 points, outperforming three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto, who took silver. This victory marks Liu as the first U.S. woman to win the title since 2006. After a two-year retirement, Liu was inspired to return to skating following a ski trip. She impressed audiences with her performance set to Donna Summer's music, earning her a standing ovation.
Liu reportedly gave a stunning free skate performance to Donna Summer's MacArthur Park on Friday night after also winning the short program portion of the women's singles competition earlier in the week.
The win makes Liu the first US woman to win the championship since 2006 when Kimmie Meissner earned the title.
