Padraig O'Hora and Irish team safely return to Everest Base Camp as civic reception planned
Ballina Municipal District councillors proposed holding a civic ceremony in the council chamber to honour Mayo GAA star Pádraig O'Hora. O'Hora, along with Éanna McGowan and Adam Sweeney, formed the first full Irish team to summit Mount Everest in more than 20 years. After 47 days on the mountain, the trio reached the summit at 1.33am GMT on May 20, becoming the 67th, 68th, and 69th Irish people to do so. Adam Sweeney, aged 22, became the youngest Irish person to summit Everest. Councillors praised O'Hora’s achievement at the May monthly meeting and called for formal recognition by the district and Mayo County Council. The expedition was led by Jason Black, who stayed at Base Camp after an ankle injury prevented him from completing the climb.
"Councillors in the Ballina Municipal District have proposed holding a civic ceremony in the council chamber to honour Mayo GAA star and recent Everest summiteer Pádraig O'Hora. "Cathaoirleach Jarlath Munnelly congratulated Mr O'Hora and said both the Ballina Municipal District and Mayo County Council should formally recognise the accomplishment with a ceremony in the chamber upon his return home. ""It's a great achievement, 68th [person] in Ireland [to reach the summit]. When he comes back down, I trust he will say 'What will I do next' - and that's probably the adventure in him. It's a great achievement, and I wish him well coming down," she said. Cllr Marie Therese Duffy said the county was immensely proud of Mr O'Hora's accomplishment. "As the second Mayo person to summit Everest, it's an incredible achievement, and we are all very proud here in Mayo," she said."
"The team's expedition was led by Donegal native Jason Black, who, unfortunately, was unable to complete the climb due to an ankle injury. Mr Black remained on hand at Base Camp to welcome his team back. "This success belongs to the climbers, their families, our incredible Sherpa team, a"
