Nepal marks 72 years since first conquest of Mount Everest summit
Briefly

Nepal's mountaineering community held a rally in Kathmandu to celebrate International Everest Day, marking the 72nd anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The event included a city walk and speeches reinforcing the importance of recognizing this historic achievement. It is not only a celebration of mountaineering but also highlights Nepal's tourism industry, where climbers hire locals for support during expeditions. This year, 468 foreign climbers received permits to attempt Everest, culminating in festivities before the onset of the monsoon season.
"We are celebrating May 29 as the international Sagarmatha (Everest) day because the world needs to continue to recognise the achievement and contribution of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay."
"This day is celebrated also to mark the end of the climbing season where we gather climbers and the community," Jiban Ghimire of Shangri-La Nepal Trek said.
