Lindsey Vonn seals Olympic favourite status with fourth podium in four downhills
"The 41-year-old American's second success and fourth podium from four downhills this season increased the veteran skier's lead in the standings and cemented her favourite status for next month's Winter Olympics. Already the oldest World Cup winner of all time, Vonn was fastest by 0.37sec from Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lie with a run of 1min 06.24sec on a cold and cloudy morning with snow falling in Zauchensee, Austria."
"I had to risk a lot with my line to really stay in the hunt. I executed my plan really well, I brought good intensity to my race. Again, I thought I had no chance so I just swung really hard. I was like: I could be last, I could be first. I have no idea but I'm going to do my best."
Lindsey Vonn won the Zauchensee downhill to raise her World Cup tally to 84 wins. The 41-year-old recorded a 1:06.24 run, beating Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lie by 0.37 seconds. Jacqueline Wiles finished third, 0.48 seconds behind on a piste shortened after Friday's training was cancelled because of heavy snowfall. Vonn said she had to risk her line and bring intensity to her race despite starting on a poor track. Corinne Suter returned from a month-long injury but finished outside the top 20. Magdalena Egger suffered a crash, hit side netting, and was stretchered to hospital with a bloodied nose.
