Klaebo's victory in the 50-kilometer mass start race shattered the nearly 50-year record set by American speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five golds in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics."
"Klaebo's victory in the 50-kilometer mass start race shattered the nearly 50-year record set by American speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five golds in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. All of Heiden's wins were in individual races and two of Klaebo's have come in team events, so Heiden's record for individual wins still stands. Klaebo also extended his record for most career Winter Olympic gold medals to 11 over three Games."
Norwegian skier Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won the 50-kilometer mass start to complete a sweep of the men's cross-country events and capture his sixth gold of the Games. The sixth gold set the record for the most gold medals by one athlete at a single Winter Olympics, surpassing American Eric Heiden's five golds from Lake Placid in 1980. Heiden's five were all individual events, while two of Klaebo's six golds were earned in team events, so Heiden's record for individual golds remains intact. Klaebo also increased his career Winter Olympic gold medal total to 11 across three Games, having broken the previous career record of eight on Feb. 15.
