'History made' as full Irish climbing team including Mayo's Padraig O'Hora summit Mount Everest
A team of Irish climbers reached the summit of Mount Everest in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a 47-day journey. The group included former Mayo intercounty footballer Pádraig O’Hora, Éanna McGowan from Dublin, and Adam Sweeney from Waterford, led by professional mountaineer Jason Black. The summit marked the first time a fully Irish team has summited Everest in more than two decades. O’Hora climbed in aid of the Mayo Mental Health Association. Sweeney, aged 22, became the youngest Irish person to reach Everest’s top. Another six Irish climbers planned further attempts in the coming days, and Pat Falvey praised the achievement as an amazing accomplishment.
"“history has been made” at the world's highest point, with the achievement marking the first time a fully Irish team has summited Everest in more than two decades."
"“This journey was about far more than standing on a summit. It was about resilience, teamwork, belief, and carrying the hopes of many people all the way to the top of the world,” he said."
"“This success belongs to the climbers, their families, our incredible Sherpa team, and everyone who followed and supported this journey. More importantly to the children of this world - this expedition has shown that if you dream big, believe in yourself, and never be afraid to chase what is in your heart, you can achieve anything.”"
"Mr O'Hora, who played for the Mayo senior footballers for seven years and comes from the Ballina Stephenites club, was climbing in aid of the Mayo Mental Health Association. At 22-years-old, Mr Sweeney, from Dunmore East in Waterford, has become the youngest Irish person to climb to the top of Mount Everest."
