Senate Republicans are considering a provision for significant public land sales under the Trump administration's "One Big, Beautiful Bill," alarming many across the U.S. In response, Big Sur, a treasured Californian coastline, reinforces its commitment to its land use plan implemented in 1986, which limits development and aims to preserve the area's natural beauty. Advocates from the local organization Keep Big Sur Wild assert that existing capacities have already been exceeded and emphasize that the land use plan serves as a model for responsible environmental management.
Keep Big Sur Wild maintains 'all capacity has already been exhausted' according to the land use plan. It allowed for a maximum of 300 units to be built. By our count, the cap has been exceeded by at least 5 units.'
'Really, the only saving grace for Big Sur is the land use plan,' Marcus Foster noted when discussing potential ramifications of federal land being sold. He indicates the importance of policy in protecting the unique environment.
