Santa Clara County Parks celebrated a significant milestone on Monday with the opening of new trails and expanded land at Coyote Lake - Harvey Bear Ranch County Park. The expansion increases the park's area from 5,216 to 8,007 acres, adding six miles of trails and creating opportunities for public enjoyment and conservation. The park, set against a scenic backdrop, includes amenities for camping, fishing, and boating, and aims to safeguard open spaces while protecting natural habitats from urban development. Acting Director Joe Aguilera emphasized this achievement as part of the county's commitment to environmental stewardship for present and future generations.
The park, called Coyote Lake - Harvey Bear Ranch County Park, stretches along the mountains east of Gilroy, featuring camping, fishing and boating on the namesake Coyote Lake.
The addition brings the total acres of the park from 5,216 to 8,007 acres, and adds six miles of trails to the more than 33 miles of trails in the park.
Joe Aguilera, Acting Director of Santa Clara County Parks, stated the addition signals a commitment to the department's mission to protect, provide, and preserve parklands for future generations.
The opening represents the next step in a decades-long process to expand the region's park system and keep lands open to the public and protected from sprawl.
