A recent report by the Bay Area Council details the potential economic ramifications of mass deportations of undocumented workers in California, estimating a $275 billion impact on the GDP. Undocumented individuals comprise a substantial percentage of farm workers and construction laborers, sectors already facing labor shortages. The report also indicates that immigration policies could worsen housing affordability challenges by limiting the available workforce necessary for construction projects, which are vital for addressing housing supply issues in the state.
They make up 33% of the state's farm workers and 26% of its construction laborers. These are sectors that already are experiencing labor shortages, absent of any immigration policy issue.
The construction industry right now is faced with a huge labor shortage. We estimate about 500,000 that we're currently short in the market.
Without a good construction workforce, if we deport a huge portion of that workforce, you know that would worsen the challenges in housing affordability.
Mass deportations across the state could impact California's GDP by up to $275 billion.
