Park Slope Coop's Israel boycott actually ripped Arab products from the shelves: business owner
A boycott vote at Park Slope Food Coop passed with 67% support and took effect immediately, with Israeli products removed from shelves by Wednesday morning. Seed + Mill founder Rachel Simons said the ban also removed Al Arz, an Israeli-Arab brand founded by an Arab-Israeli woman who built and sold the business. Simons said Equal Exchange Olive Oil was also removed despite being made by a non-profit led by Arab and Jewish women. Supporters of the boycott cited claims about Gaza and demanded barring products from Israel. Simons said the impact would fall on Arab, Jewish, Christian, and Druze workers, including those employed at a Northern Israel co-packing facility owned by Arab Muslim Israelis.
"“This is an Arab-Israeli woman who's just grown and built a successful business and sold it for $50 million,” Simons said. “And now you're going to punish her brand, her legacy, that business, because of your desire to dismantle something that, in my opinion, doesn't exist.”"
"“The boycott vote on May 26 - which drew over 7,000 members and passed with an overwhelming 67% in favor - went into effect immediately, with the Israeli products vanishing from the shelves by Wednesday morning.”"
"“But the fallout, Simons told The Post, won't impact the Israeli government - it will hurt the finances of Arab, Jewish, Christian, and Druze workers.”"
"“Seed + Mill works with a co-packing facility in Northern Israel that is owned by Arab Muslim Israelis,” says Simons. “The family-owned factory employs a mix of Arab, Jewish, Christian, and Druze workers, who will also be economically impacted.”"
